Steph Curry avoids injury scare in Warriors open practice

Warriors guard Steph Curry hobbled out of practice on Sunday with a non-contact injury

SAN FRANCISCO — Sunday was the Warriors’ open practice, usually the last big event before the start of the regular season. Well about 45 minutes in, everyone at Chase Center held their breath when Stephen Curry limped over to the sideline and later to the locker room.

Curry was looking to make a move against De’Anthony Melton, and it looks like his body got stuck after his sneakers squeaked. Here’s the video:

“He said he’s fine,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after practice.

Curry has a sprained right ankle, per the Warriors.

The best news is that Curry didn’t injure his knee, an injury that caused him to miss 27 games last season with soreness in his right knee.

Curry spent the offseason and preseason reworking his routine in order to stay healthy for the regular season.

The knee soreness Curry has been dealing with is known as runner’s knee, which is an ongoing condition Curry and the Warriors have managed this preseason by limiting his minutes.

“Always, always,” Kerr said. “He’s fine. I went and talked to him after he went downstairs, and I went in the training room. He’s doing fine.”

The Warriors have been cautious in Curry’s ramp-up this season, as he is now 38 and entering his 18th season.

Curry played a little under 18 minutes per game in the preseason and averaged 13 points while shooting 44 percent from the field (20 of 45) and 41.9 percent from three (13 of 31). His best performance was in their final preseason game on Friday against the Portland Trailblazers.

It now seems Curry’s status for the Warriors’ opening night game against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Wednesday is uncertain and up in the air.

The Warriors are already dealing with a plethora of injuries. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody continue to rehab leg injuries, and an illness has kept Kristaps Porziņģis away from the team for the last three weeks.

Opening night is two days away.
