Lions Notes: Detroit Lions get some defensive help before Week 3

The Detroit Lions signed rookie defensive back Bishop Fitzgerald off of the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad and onto their 53-man roster.

The Lions cut linebacker Joe Bachie to make room for the move. Head coach Dan Campbell made it clear on Monday that there will be some shakeup in the secondary room as the defense has struggled and allowed an ugly 71 points through the first two games.

They especially need some help at the safety position now that Avonte Maddox is out for the season after suffering a foot injury against the Bills. Earlier in the week, the Lions signed veteran safety Jalen Mills to the practice squad.

Fitzgerald went undrafted this year after playing at NC State and USC in college. In 2025, Fitzgerald was an All-American safety last season at USC after totaling 51 tackles and 5 interceptions.

The Lions filled their final spot on the 53-man roster by signing center Seth Mclaughlin.
