Training camp will look a whole lot different, though. As the NHL season has expanded this year from 82 to 84 games, there is now a shorter preseason, from six to four games.
The Sharks season opener is on October 1st at SAP Center against the Florida Panthers.
The Sharks have a lot to fix and focus on before then. San Jose was ranked 30th in the NHL in goals allowed per game (3.54) last season. Despite the abysmal defense, San Jose only missed out on the playoffs by four points a season ago, and I hope this is the year where the young core can get some playoff experience.
“But that’s going to be a big thing for us if we want to make the playoffs and take the steps that we want to take, is to limit some of those mental errors and defend as hard as we can.” Macklin Celebrini said this offseason.
The Sharks addressed their defense this off-season by completing revamping their blue line. They brought in veterans like Darnell Nurse and Jacob Trouba with the hopes of improving from a year ago.
