ESPN’s Shams Charania reported this morning that Draymond Green is declining his 27.7 million dollar player option to become a free agent. This gives the Warriors the flexibility to pursue both Lebron James and Anthony Davis. This would create a new big four in the bay with Steph Curry and Draymond Green, who is likely to sign a multi year deal with the Warriors later this summer at a lower average annual value.
Green’s decision came at a surprise for most even Warriors general manager, Mike Dunleavy who said last week he expected Draymond to opt in. But, it sounds like Green is willing to take a pay cut to maximize these last few years the core has left.
Green, who shares an agent, Klutch Sports’ Rich Paul, with both James and Davis possibly may have been relayed this information But, to no surprise both Curry and Green would be thrilled to have James and Davis team up with them in Golden State.
There are a few issues. In order to acquire Anthony Davis from the Wizards, the Warriors would have to part ways with Jimmy Butler who makes 56.7 million this upcoming season to match Davis’ nearly identical contract of 58.4 million. This means the Warriors would have to part ways with Butler after only a year and a half.
The NBA offseason is just heating up and it sounds like the Warriors are going deep sea fishing this summer for some of the biggest fish around.
