In a game filled with plenty of ups and downs the Lions still found a way to beat the undefeated Minnesota Vikings to take sole possession of first place in the NFC North.
The Lions couldn’t have had a more terrible start to this one. Three straight three and outs including a failed fake punt gave the Vikings some momentum and the opportunity to jump out to a early 10-0 lead. But, the Lions didn’t waver, they came back with two drives ending in two touchdowns. A 45 yard touchdown run from Jahmyr Gibbs got the Lions to within three and later a 35 yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown ended up giving them lead.
Later, Brian Branch continued his incredible stretch to start this season by intercepting Sam Darnold. This gave the Lions tremendous field position and they capitlized on it. A eight yard touchdown run right before the end of the half by Jahmyr Gibbs gave the Lions a 11 point lead heading into the break.
The Vikings answered right back in the third quarter on a Justin Jefferson touchdown reception. It didn’t matter, Jared Goff continued aggressively pushing the ball down the field and the Lions got back in the end zone on an another Jared Goff touchdown pass. This time to Kalif Raymond, to give the Lions a 28-17 lead.
The Lions defense ogt multiple important stops holding the Vikings to three points multiple times. But, a costly David Montgomery fumble that was returned for a touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter, many thought the Vikings put this game on ice. But, not so fast.
After a key stop on third down the Lions defense got the offense the ball back for a potential game winning drive. Jared Goff with elite poise and accuracy led the offense down the field to set up Jake Bates with a 44 yard field goal and Bates delivered with 15 seconds left to give the Lions a huge divisional win.
The Lions are now 5-1 and first place in the NFC North. They are back at home this Sunday against the struggling Tennessee Titans.
