Jared Goff and Lions Agree to a 4 year $212 million Contract Extension

Make it three for three. The Lions came into the offseason after their best season in 30 years with hopes to extend Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, Jared Goff, and Brad Holmes got all 3 deals done.

Per Adam Schefter’s report this afternoon, Goff and the Lions agreed to a 4 year, $212 million contract extension that included $170 million guaranteed. This makes Goff the 2nd highest paid quarterback in the league on a per year basis at $53 million per year right behind Joe Burrow at $55 million per year.

Personally, I like the deal. Do I think $53 million is a little bit too much? Yes. But, the Lions had to pay him for where the market is currently and I’m glad Brad Holmes got it done this offseason. The market was set two offseasons ago when other quarterbacks like Derek Carr and Daniel Jones were each paid $30 to $40 million dollars per year, two guys Jared Goff is better than. For where the quarterback market is, the Lions did not have too many options. They needed to pay their guy who won them their first division title in thirty years and led them to their first NFC Championship game appearance in thirty years.

When Jared Goff arrived in Detroit in 2021, I like many other Lions fans thought that he was a bridge piece, he would be here for two years max. He got off to a rocky start but as Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell put pieces around him, he began to flourish and since starting 1-6 in 2022 he has led the Lions to a 20-7 regular season record. Jared Goff isn’t flashy by any means, but he gets the job done and wins you football games. For back to back years he has been at the helm of an offense that has finished top 5 in total offensive yardage and during these past two years has helped build a winning culture here in Detroit, something I have never seen during my lifetime as a Lions fan.

Goff is deserving of a contract extension in Detroit and I’m glad he got it.
